Pass a Skip the Stuff Ordinance in Norway, Maine

Dear Norway Town Officials,

On behalf of the ___ undersigned community members and Surfrider’s Maine Chapter, we respectfully urge you to pass a Skip the Stuff ordinance in the Town of Norway.

This commonsense policy would require that disposable utensils, condiments, and other single-use takeout accessories only be provided upon request. By shifting the default, Norway can significantly reduce unnecessary plastic waste while honoring customer choice and helping local restaurants lower costs.
Most takeout and delivery meals are eaten at home or in workplaces where reusable items are readily available. Yet disposable utensils and condiment packets are routinely included by default, contributing to unnecessary waste, litter, and long-term plastic pollution that impacts Maine’s communities and waterways.
Skip the Stuff is a practical, cost-saving solution that
  • Supports local businesses by cutting unnecessary expenses
  • Aligns with Maine’s commitment to environmental stewardship
  • Reduces plastic pollution at the source
By adopting this ordinance, Norway has the opportunity to lead by example and help build statewide momentum to reduce single-use plastic waste.
We look forward to working with you to advance this smart, effective policy for the benefit of Norway residents, businesses, and Maine’s environment.

Sincerely,

Pass a Skip the Stuff Ordinance in Norway, Maine

Help Surfrider’s Maine Chapter pass a Skip the Stuff Ordinance in the Town of Norway and build momentum across the state to reduce plastic pollution, save local restaurants money, and protect our ocean, waves, and beaches.

Skip the Stuff seeks to change the expectations of restaurant takeout and delivery food customers. Instead of expecting to receive extra items like utensils and condiments, under Skip the Stuff, customers will expect to not receive those items unless they specifically request them.

This ordinance would save restaurants money, as nationally, restaurants spend about $20 billion per year on such items. Nearly all – 98% – of restaurant takeout and delivery orders are eaten at home or in an office, where reusable utensils are available, and preferred.
