Tell Congress to Reject the Permitting Reform Bill (BAAJA)
The Senate is considering the Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act (BAAJA), a sweeping permitting reform bill that would make it easier to develop energy projects across the county.
BAAJA would fast-track fossil fuel extraction, offshore drilling, and seabed mining, while weakening longstanding environmental protections. The bill would also limit the ability of states and Tribes to protect their waterways from pollution, restrict environmental oversight of previously approved projects, and make it harder for future administrations to protect coastlines from new offshore oil and gas drilling.
Surfrider does not support this bill’s approach of sacrificing critical safeguards, public participation, and environmental protections. While this bill would advance renewable energy development and expand transmission infrastructure, it does so by removing long-standing environmental protections that will be difficult, if not impossible, to reinstate.
Congress is expected to consider this bill immediately after the midterms, so please click take action to contact your Congressional representatives and ask them to vote NO on the bill in its current form. It’s critical that they hear your perspective on permitting reform, offshore drilling, and the importance of protecting our ocean and coasts!
