In addition to direct attempts by the Trump administration to open up new offshore oil and gas drilling, upcoming actions in Congress could weaken the few protections we have in place against new drilling, further threatening our coasts. Proposed bills would roll back critical oversight authorities and pollution prevention practices, and give the administration even more power to force through unpermitted energy projects.

While the Department of Interior’s public comment period on the draft proposal to open vast stretches of U.S. coastlines to new offshore oil and gas drilling (nearly 1.3 billion acres!) ended on January 23, a final decision on the offshore drilling plan is not expected until later 2026. We must continue to urge our federal leaders to stop this dangerous proposal from being enacted while also blocking bills that aim to advance new drilling by rolling back important laws and policies. Congress is our last line of defense to protect our coasts from new oil and gas development!
