Around the country, beach-goers rely on BEACH Act funded water quality monitoring programs to know if it’s safe to go into the water. Congress is now considering a bill to reauthorize this critical federal grant program at EPA.
This BEACH Act reauthorization bill extends funding for beach water quality testing programs and proposes new flexibility for state implementation. This would allow testing of streams that flow across the beach, where Surfrider often finds high bacteria levels and many kids unknowingly play in the water. Coastal states would also be able to complete source tracking studies with grant dollars so pollution problems can be fixed.
The good news is the BEACH Act reauthorization bill has already passed the House as part of the American Water Stewardship Act. Now we just need the Senate to make moves and advance this important bill.
