Urge NOAA to Reject Harmful Seabed Mining in the Pacific
The Trump administration is advancing a dangerous proposal by The Metals Company USA to conduct deep-sea mining across 65,000 km² of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. Located between Hawaiʻi and Mexico, this sensitive marine ecosystem is a biodiversity hotspot that could be irreparably harmed by the industrial-scale mining of minerals from the ocean floor.
The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is accepting public feedback on the proposal. Please submit your official comment against harmful seabed mining in the Pacific Ocean!
Deep-sea mining operations damage seafloor habitats, create sediment clouds in the water column, and harm the health of marine ecosystems and wildlife populations. It is expensive, untested, and destructive. We can’t afford the risks and impacts of a project of this magnitude.
The administration’s efforts to fast-track seabed mining in international waters contradict the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the International Seabed Authority. Ignoring international governance undermines the United States’ standing and sets a dangerous precedent for other countries to conduct illegal activities on the High Seas.
