Join us in asking the North Carolina General Assembly to pass Senate Bill 20, Prohibiting Certain Mass Balloon Releases.
Balloons, whether made up of latex, nylon, or mylar when intentionally or accidentally released, create plastic pollution that can cause harm to wildlife, domestic animals, humans, and the environment. Balloon pollution is a global issue that has no boundaries. Animals, both wild and domestic, can mistake balloons for food or find themselves snared in plastic ribbons, strings, and other materials associated with balloons. Thin, metallic casing in mylar balloons makes them a fire hazard when caught in power lines and they can also cause power outages. It’s important to address this across the state of NC and not just the coast.
Senate Bill 20 will prohibit the mass release of balloons, significantly reducing the threat that they cause to the environment and the ocean.
